louise, you're becoming way too predictable

Romantic Comedies, ick.

Rom coms, chick flicks, date movies, whatever you call them they've always been something I hate. Don't get me wrong, I could sit through and even appreciate the odd romatic comedy with my girlfriends every now and then. Hungover Sunday evenings in bed with biscuits being the obvious situational choice. But as a sweeping, overarching general rule, I could comfortably say they have never been my movie genre of choice.

So why now, is every movie on my to-watch list ticking the romantic comedy box?

It does seem that the rom-com of late has evolved somewhat into a painfully awkward, identifiable, witty and touching film, starring Michel Cera.

Newest addition to this list is Paper Heart, I just watched the adorable trailer, forwarded it to a few friends, and then threw up a little in my mouth as I recalled doing the same not so long ago with Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Remember Juno? Sensing a pattern here? Youth in Revolt looks set to be another of the same.

Please note, I am not complaining. I am a sucker for Michael Cera and his embarassing, awkward romances, through and through. I am excited about seeing each of these films, it is the fact that this is the case which I wonder about...

Oh also fitting somewhere in here, sans Michael Cera but including all the awkwardness, not to mention Paper Heart's documentary style and the all-too necessary sweet ending, in a nice British way, is A Complete History of my Sexual Failures.

Sorry I'm yet to work out how to put little videos in these posts, so here are some pictures and links to the trailers on otehr sites. Watch them they're so sweet!

inspiration

My recent house move and impending birthday has provided me with quite a valid excuse for a party, so now the obsession with balloons I've had of late, well at least with pictures of them, has resulted in 100 filled with helium floating in my living room. Glee!

I've been totally inspired by this rather Jeurgen Teller for Marc Jacobs-ey campaign from United Bamboo. The campaign stars artist Terrence Koh, who besides his art is known for his love of this particular Fendi coat, I personally am quite enamoured with the pretty crepe and tinsel decorations behind him. I spotted this ad in the last issue of The Journal (which features an excellent Jeurgen shoot with Pamela Anderson, Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler, and an interview with Ol' Dirty Bastard's M0m), and finally have a good reason to get crafty and rip them off... Will update with pictures next week, if they turn out pretty.

This campaign was shot by Marcelo Krasilcic, with set design by Confetti System

Just lovely. I can't think of much to write about these, but today I am loving balloons. Maybe because it's April...

i love audrey

Four years ago I wrote this on Myspace:

"I think I might get my haircut like Audrey Horne.

But it's too straight. Maybe I could get a perm? Oh for that glorious few weeks I would have THE hottest hair out of everyone I know. Enough of this fringe bullshit, bangs blow.

Also, Whatever happened to Lara Flynn Boyle? It's sad really."

I remembered this yesterday after writing almost the same thing in an email to my mother. I am obsessed with this hair.

I buy records purely for their aesthetic value, and my most recent vinyl purchase was this, Stop Look and Listen Volume 5. I figure I can take it along with the Audrey pics to the hairdresser for clarity...

So, a perm? Hot rollers in the morning? Regular rollers overnight? Anyone know the best way to achieve these buoyant waves with naturally dead-straight hair?

Also, on an Audrey note, hooray for winter and tights and sweaters an knits and tweed!

we all love getting postcards

When I was little Susie (that's my mum) bought home a "Life Goes to the Movies" book, full of photos like this...a little later perhaps. I used to carefully go through it, fascinated by the images and their stories. As a ten year old I think I knew more about Clark Gable than any ten year old of the nineties should have. The book was also really dusty so I'd have sneezing fits while in a pre-teen swoon. Sneezing and swooning, what a family trait! So when I found a link to this European Film Star Postcard whilst ambling (trawling?) through Liebermarle's archives, it made my week.

Aren't these beautiful?
Also these ladies have the most amazing names, Hilda, Maude, Valery, Elena, Marlene, Annabella.

As you may have expected, I covet the hair, clothes, makeup and general 'tude of all these ladies. Unfortunately I just don't seem to be able to maintain a rigorous grooming regimen. Sigh. Such is life.

The first image is from a postcard for Pierrot or Histoire d'un Pierrot (1917), a film Diana Karenne directed herself.

These ladies did menswear so very, very well.

Miss Maud Fealy is lovely and pre-raphaelite-y, all creamy lace and dreamy eyes. We all know thats a good look. I also like the way she is Maud without an 'e'. I imagine it may have been quite modern at the time.
And these ladies are just so sexy...Hilda, Elena and Annabella.
My favourite is this photo of Elisabeth Bergner - I remember finding it sometime last year and being completely struck by her. Even better, this actress is thought by many to be the inspiration for Margot Channing from All About Eve. Lou and I love Margot (I have fond memories of watching it in your bed, Louis).

Photos taken from rosewithoutathorn84 and Truus, Bob & Jan too!'s flickrs...have a look through this photostream for more!

oh my oh my oh my

I haven't got time for this at all – running out the door, but I just found, and had to share, this amazing Flickr set from Abbey. The pictures are pretty but what a PERFECT gift. Sigh, how beautiful.

"My husband gave me a wonderful 29th birthday gift -- 52 tiny red envelopes with a handwritten love note and a bit of cash in each, just enough to run across the street to the flower stand and make a bouquet, once a week."

oh to be in love

...and never get out again...

"If she loves you, if she really loves you, you’ll know it. If you can wake up to her staring at you and it’s not even mildly creepy, if you catch her smelling the shoulder of the hooded sweatshirt you lent her for an autumn walk at the beach, and not for B.O., if she makes you a pancake in the shape of a shark, if she calls you drunkenly at four in the morning “to talk,” if she laughs at your jokes when they’re funny and makes fun of you when they’re not, if she keeps her fridge stocked with Guinness tallboys for when you come over, if she tells you how she wishes she were closer to her sister and that her dad makes her sad: She loves you, of course she loves you."

- Pasha Malla, from an article in The Morning News

This is just how I feel! This week I'm moving into a new home, which means new room - with floor to ceiling shelves and an avocado tree outside!! - and getting to do all the lovely setting up and unpacking and 'playing house' which I adore.

In preparation I have freshly washed all my white bedding and requested the squishy cloudey feather duvet be sent from NZ. It's getting colder here so I've also bought, and am rather excited about, a white crochet bedspread/throw. Dreamy.

How much do you love clouds? As much as me? I mentioned a wee while ago my desire to make a mobile and have now decided exactly what it's going to be...
